Frequently Asked Questions

Are in-kind donations tax-deductible?
Yes, in-kind donations to Dilulu are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. We provide donation receipts that include a description of the donated items or services and, where applicable, their estimated fair market value. We recommend consulting with your tax advisor regarding the specific tax implications of your donation.
Do you accept used items?
Yes, we accept gently used items that are in good working condition and can be effectively utilized in our programs. For technology donations, we generally request that equipment be no more than 5 years old. For tools and equipment, we ask that they be clean, functional, and have reasonable remaining useful life.
How do I arrange delivery or pickup of donated items?
After we accept your donation offer, we'll work with you to coordinate logistics. For smaller items, we may arrange pickup by our staff or volunteers, or provide drop-off locations. For larger donations, we may coordinate with shipping partners or arrange for direct delivery to our facilities or program sites. We're flexible and will work to find the most convenient solution.
Can I donate items from outside Africa?
Yes, we accept international donations, though additional considerations apply. For physical items, we need to account for shipping costs, customs duties, and import regulations. In some cases, it may be more effective to provide a financial donation that we can use to purchase similar items locally. For digital resources or professional services, international donations are often easier to facilitate.
How will I know my donation is being put to good use?
We provide donors with updates on how their contributions are being utilized in our programs. Depending on the size and nature of the donation, this may include photos, stories, or impact reports. We're committed to transparency and ensuring that all donations are used effectively to support our mission.
What if you can't use my donation?
If we determine that we cannot effectively use your offered donation, we'll let you know promptly and may suggest alternative organizations that might be better suited to receive it. We carefully assess all donation offers to ensure they align with our current needs and can be utilized effectively in our programs.
